CHRISTMAS FAIR
SATURDAY 14TH NOVEMBER 2009
AT REDDISH COMMUNITY CENTRE, STOCKPORT
Despite the bad weather, Manchester Dogs’ Home customers gathered together recently at the Reddish Community Centre, Stockport to celebrate the festive season. This well organised event provided many with the chance to be ready in plenty of time for Christmas, with a dozen or so stall-holders offering many useful gifts for all the family. These included MCDH dog collars and leads, doggy clothing, quirky ornaments, colourful jewellery, soft toys, toiletries, hand-sewn doggy Christmas stockings and ‘bags for life’ and a tombola. In addition to this, there were Christmas raffle tickets for sale and a tempting selection of delicious cakes and hot drinks on offer.
Star of the BBC drama series, ‘Waterloo Road' and patron of the Dogs' Home, Jason Done, was on hand to show his support and enjoyed the afternoon along with his wife and MDH dog Rigsby, who was sporting a very fashionable hoodie by the end of the day!
The three winners of the ‘Debdale Annual Sponsored Walk’ - in the Much Money Raised, Most Laps Walked and Oldest dog to take part categories - were also awarded with their hamper prizes, which were kindly donated by Barking Barbers, alongside the MCDH mascot Pickles who was, as usual, jostling for position in front of the camera!
A big thank you as always to all visitors who attended. We look forward to seeing you again next year!

RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNERSHIP EVENT
SATURDAY 19TH SEPTEMBER
HELD AT HEATON PARK, MANCHESTER
The Responsible Dog Ownership event and Fun Dog Show took place in Heaton Park on Saturday 19 th September, in a glorious setting, overlooked by the magnificent 18 th Century Heaton Hall. Blessed with a fine autumn day the event drew a good turnout of competitors and spectators with their excitable pooches eager to put their best paw forward.
The event was managed by the ever enthusiastic MCDH staff and volunteers providing information on adoption services, volunteering opportunities, on site micro-chipping and raffle / tombola competitions. Other a ttractions included donkey rides and stalls selling tasty cupcakes, designer handbags and jewellery, doggy products and homemade cosmetics.
As the show commenced, the judges were temporarily distracted by the antics of an opportunistic donkey making a sharp exit across the field. Our intrepid fundraiser, Dawn Lonergan, responded with stealth and speed to apprehend the wayward creative and return it safely. She was rewarded for her bravely with a heavy foot stomping.
The judging was performed by Anthony Bilson, an Administration Assistant at MDH with stewarding from volunteer Helen Mason and there were some tricky decisions to be made with a high standard of competition. The “Dog with the Best Trick” event proved popular as ever drawing great appreciation from the crowd for the performance of sit, roll-over, play dead, beg and stay. But the winning performance went to the ‘Sweetest OAP' 12 years old ‘Skinbo' with his owner Joanne Shepherd proving that an old dog can pull off some new tricks.
A wide range of breeds were also represented in the pedigree event from the Chinese crested no hair to a Japanese Sheba-Inu, but 1 st place went to the smart, bandana-clad schnauzer called Magic, who was owned by Jean Murray.
Prizes for the Best in Show and Best in Show Reserve were kindly donated by Barking Barkers, with the winners walking away with an impressive Barking Barbers Hamper Package. The winner of the Best In Show being ‘Magic' and the Best In Show Reserve ‘Jolene' with owner Lindsey Bell.
All monies raised from the event will be used to care for dogs at both Cheshire and Manchester Dogs' Home. A big thank you to all competitors, staff, volunteers and pooches who attended the event.
We look forward to seeing you all next year!

MANCHESTER PRIDE EVENT
SATURDAY 29TH, SUNDAY 30TH & MONDAY 31ST AUGUST
Pickles the MDCH Mascot came out for the three days of Manchester's Pride and brought with him both staff and volunteers from Manchester Dogs' Home to man the stall that was situated on the market in the midst of the Village. He was quite the celebrity and everybody wanted their photos taken with him. The stall next to ours was even making Pickles' key-rings and giving us a donation for everyone they sold. He even made it onto the unofficial video that was made to a Lily Allen song (his appearance is one and a half minutes long!)
Unfortunately, the weather wasn't very kind to us this year and so the market wasn't as busy as we would have hoped. However, our spirits weren't dampened and we made the most of the colourful, carnival atmosphere! We still managed to beat the total raised at last year's Pride, which was fantastic news.
In addition to this, it was great to see some familiar faces visit the stall to say hello, having adopted a dog from MDH previously. Hopefully we met quite a few new friends who will also come along and adopt a dog in the near future.
Plenty of people stopped to enter our free to enter raffle, with the tempting prize of a beautiful luxury doggy hamper filled with beauty products and treats, courtesy of Bow Meow in Warrington. Many left a donation or bought their preened pooches a present or two to take home.
That said, just as many visitors stopped to say hello to Lisa Graham, the Home Manager's dogs Matilda and Spud. Spud got into the spirit by modelling a selection of pink outfits over the course of the weekend. He took the adoration in his stride, especially during the times he fell asleep on a dog bed on the stall.
A big thank you to everybody who visited us and the staff and volunteers who helped us out over the weekend. Look forward to seeing you all again next year.

PINK DOG SHOW
SUNDAY 23RD AUGUST
What a great day was had by all who turned up to the fantastic Pink Dog Show. The event was held in the Park located next to Canal Street, and has in it a statue of the famous mathematician Alan Turin, the person who helped crack the Enigma Code in WW11, and acclaimed by many to be the father of the modern computer.
Registration for the event began at a brisk pace, with many of the owners entering for the “fancy dress” sections of the competition. As usual the event was well staffed with both MCDH staff, and volunteers, who all joined in to set up the event stalls, and staff them during the show.
As usual the free “chipping” service was available, as well as a free health check-up from “Healthy Harvey”, and both these services were well attended. The MCDH stall also had a wide variety of cakes made by the volunteers, and these went down a great treat with the people who bought them, including the lemon drizzle cake bought by the event judge, Warrior, from the TV series Gladiators.
Warrior was a great judge, and all who talked to him remarked how gentle and caring he appeared, and took the time to talk to all the entrants in turn, and to see this giant of a man with “Stuart Little” was a sight to behold, nearly as good as seeing “Pickles” trying to kiss poor small “Stuart”!
The standard of the competitions was very high, with nearly all the entrants “made up” in all variety of outfits, ranging from a prince charming top hat, to a full blown costume of a Fairy complete with a wand and wings.
The final four classes of judging for Queen, King, Princess and Prince of the show had prizes supplied by Barking Barbers, and these gifts were really worth winning, as the pictures would prove, and the competitors picked were well worth their individual accolades, as the outfits were fantastic, and reflected the atmosphere of the entire event, which was well organised and attended.
Many thanks to MCDH staff and volunteers, Barking Barbers, Warrior for being such a great judge, and most of all to all the owners who took part in such a great event during Manchester Pride week.

CHESHIRE GAME & ANGLING FAIR
SUNDAY 16TH AUGUST
MCDH attended The Cheshire Game and Angling Fair at Peover Park near Knutsford and despite a somewhat overcast start to the day, the rain held off and the day brightened up.
We arrived fairly soon after the gates opened and, as you can see from the photographs, there was a wide range of attractions and stalls on offer to suit all tastes and ages and the event provided an ideal opportunity for the whole family to come and enjoy the day together.
Attractions on offer included clay pigeon shooting, gundog displays, fairground rides, chainsaw carving demonstrations, falconry displays, a farrier competition, archery, side saddle competition, dog agility competition and a vintage machinery display.
There were a number of other charity stalls there on the day including The Gurkhas Association and Ferret Rescue.
Our stall's tombola was particularly popular and our display boards and adoption files attracted potential new homes for both our Cheshire and Manchester dogs. All money raised on the day will go towards caring for our dogs at both centres.
A big thank you as always to all visitors who attended. We look forward to seeing you again next year!

CHESHIRE DOGS' HOME ANNUAL SPONSORED DOG WALK
SUNDAY 9TH AUGUST
As usual the dog walking public didn't let MCDH down. They turned out in large numbers for our Annual Sponsored Dog Walk and enjoyed every moment of the event.
For those of you who have not been to the Cheshire Dogs' Home, it is a wonderful new complex, complete with a special unit for dealing with long stay dogs and these separate enclosures are very spacious. Each one has a nice comfy sofa, complete with toys, blankets and a nice play area. It all helps these less fortunate dogs readjust to being with people and other dogs!
The show was well organised as usual and featured an array of stalls to tempt people. Amongst these were such diverse offerings as head massage, bead making, face painting, a dog tombola, aromatherapy products, handmade cards and pet portraits. The offer of an instant framed pet photograph of your favourite pooch at a very good price by one of the photography studios at the event, was a great hit with many of the public.
The main attraction though was the sponsored dog walk and, believe me when I say that all shapes and sizes of dogs turned out to complete as many laps of the beautiful country path walk (contained within the area of the Home) as they could manage! During the day it was possible for people to take some of the Homes dogs around the course and there was a very good response from both pre-registered and last minute participants.
Perhaps one of the most courageous dogs to attempt this was 15 ½ year old Holly, owned by Mrs Ashton. Not only was the age of Holly something to marvel at, I don't think many people of that doggy age could manage the walk, but the fact that Holly was deaf and had only ONE eye and she was partially blind in her ‘good eye' made her achievement even more to marvel at. She managed about six plus laps. Good on her!
The event was extremely successful with a good turnout and we were blessed with a glorious afternoon of sunshine. We raised more money than last year, so a really great thank you to all who attended and who have helped us continue the work carried out by both the Manchester and Cheshire Dogs' Homes.
The culmination of the day was a very colourful event from the Therwell Morris Dancing Group who wowed everybody with a very fine performance of their art, which went down extremely well. Thanks lads.
The weather is always an unknown factor in the organisation of any show, but we were very lucky this year and a great time was had by all, especially all of the dog walkers. Thank you to all of them and we hope to see you in 2010. Looking forward to meeting Holly again then!

DEBDALE PARK FESTIVAL/FUN DOG SHOW
SUNDAY 26TH JULY
What can I say, the rain came down, the clouds were dark, and it seemed that this years Debdale Park Festival would be a wash out! But you can't dampen the spirits of the MCDH staff and volunteers, everybody knuckled down against the wind and driving rain to get the stalls ready for what public there might be! And the owners and dogs turned up, not a few as expected, but loads of them, after all dogs are walked in all sorts of weather, so a bit of rain was not going to stop them coming!
The judging at the event was performed by Josie Jackson the MCDH chairperson, who had some pretty hard decisions to make, especially at the cutest puppy section, how hard was that, every single dog deserved to win, but the cute Tyson was a well deserved champion!
The staff and volunteers on the stalls worked very hard to keep up with the throng of dog owners waiting to register, win on the Tombola or Raffle, or to have their dog chipped, at the very exceptional rate of £5.
As the rain eased off, the judging continued through to best in show, which was won by Pauline Barlow with the well named Scamp, he was a character! Second prize went to Joe Black with the ever playful Jess, well done!
But by far the most popular dog was Samson, owned by Sarah Brady. Samson had won the Best Trick category with an extremely impressive performance, and everybody was so taken with Samson, that his owner was asked to show his performance again. This time he performed for 3mins, performing every trick from walking backwards, on TWO legs, to striking various poses, such as the Meer Cat, all of which had to be seen to be believed!
All in all, the entire event was enjoyed by all, in spite of the rain. A very big thanks to all whom attended and gave generously, and to Barking Barbers for their Best In Show winners prize of the Pampers Package, and to the staff and volunteers for enduring the full fury of an English “Summer”, Well done everybody, and lets hope for better weather next year.

MANCHESTER & CHESHIRE DOGS' HOME
ATTEND CHESHIRE COUNTY SHOW
TUESDAY 23RD & WEDNESDAY 24TH JUNE
Cheshire Dogs' Home was proud to participate in one of the county's most eagerly awaited events as a record number of visitors defied the credit crunch to celebrate Cheshire's thriving agricultural heritage.
Over both days more than 80,000 people attended the show at Tabley Showground, near Knutsford and the true stars of the show, the animals, also came in their thousands – and our stall enjoyed more than it's fair share of canine visitors!
Special guest at the event was Prof David Bellamy and throngs of people basked in the glorious sunshine around the Main Ring absorbing the exciting atmosphere and watching the thrilling attractions - which included the ultimate bird of prey experience The Eagle and Vulture Show and an extreme motorcycle display team. Catering to suit all tastes and ages, there were also a number of craft demonstrations and displays by the Cheshire Polo team, the Heavy Cavalry and the Pony Club.
For the thousands of peckish and thirsty visitors, there was also the huge food marquee where hundreds of food producers offered delicacies from across the world.
As the temperatures hotted up, so did the queue for the Cheshire Dogs' Home paddling pool which, as you can see from our photos, proved a great favourite with both owners and dogs alike!
It is thanks to the support of our volunteers and visitors that the show was a huge success as it was, so we would like to say a big thank you to everyone for their efforts.
Hope to see you all again next year!

CHESHIRE DOGS' HOME CELEBRATES 10TH ANNIVERSARY
Cheshire Dogs' Home celebrated its 10th anniversary with a Summer fun day and dog show on Sunday 14th June.
Star of the BBC drama series, ‘Waterloo Road', and patron of the Dogs' Home, Jason Done, was on hand to show his support and enjoy the celebrations along with his dog Rigsby.
The public were out in force with their own dogs, a large number of whom had been adopted from the Dogs' Home, to enjoy a quintessentially British Summer day out and to enter their pooches in the dog show.
Guests were treated to stalls selling homemade cakes, a chocolatier, a Mongolian wood carver, Icescape Alaskan Malamute Sled Dog Team,
Rodeo Bull, 20ft Climbing Wall, Dave Jellybean Man, Chris Topper Puppets, Dial A Dog Wash, the Cheshire Fire Brigade and live music from Mereside Brass Band and Petrabox and Facepainters. The day reached a climax when the winners of the ‘earliest adopted dog competition' and dog show were announced and the procession of proud pooches and their owners collected their prizes.

ARLEY HALL HORSE TRIALS & COUNTRY FAIR EVENT
SATURDAY 23RD & SUNDAY 24TH MAY
The sun always seems to shine brightly on Arley Hall in Cheshire and this year was no exception. This is an annual event in the social calendar and is a major attraction for which people travel from both near and far.
The entire site was taken up by up a multitude of stalls and activities. To greet visitors at the entrance was the Superlambanana, named Flora. Further into the grounds there was also a birds of prey display and a selection of classic cars. The owners of these cars are very proud of their vehicles and enjoyed a refreshing ‘Pimms' breakfast to start the day!
The MDH / CDH stall was pitched near the entrance, which proved an ideal spot as it attracted the majority of visitors upon arrival. Providing educational information, details of Cheshire dogs up for adoption and both CDH's and MDH's upcoming events, there was a constant queue of people and our donation boxes were soon filling up! The registration desk for the Fun Dog Show was very popular and over the weekend, we actually processed 173 total entrant applications.
Next to our stall was ‘Arena B' where the Dog Show was held, alongside the ‘K9 Companions' who rescued abused fighting dogs and retrain them to enter back into normal life and help them find families to care for them. One prize example was Zac, an ex fighting dog, who is a great advert for their patience and training abilities. Zac had been abused in horrific ways to encourage him to fight, and of course when he didn't win anymore, he was abandoned to his fate. After being taken in by ‘K9' he was retrained – this took 18 months, but the finished article was there for all to see, he was being patted by children and socialising with other dogs, without any aggression.
Also in ‘Arena B' was perhaps the strangest race seen by the crowd – ferret racing! This was presented by the Ferret Rescue League and was a great hit with everybody, except the ferrets, who refused to enter into the spirit of the event by running the wrong way down the tubes!
Further into the grounds ‘Arena A' was used for jousting complete with a ‘knight's tent' for their dog and dog trial shows.
There were also cross country horse trials and various show jumping events, which all added to the overall thrill of the day for the public. The event was also attended by the local, and some not so local, suppliers of meat, cheeses and organic goods as well as some very good local brewers.
Our Fun Dog Show was judged on Sat 23 rd by volunteer Mike, who did an efficient job and by Beech House Veterinary Centre in-house vet Shaun on the Sunday. The categories on both days were all very difficult to judge and the competition between entrants was extremely high – and none of us envied the very hard decisions that both Shaun and Mike had to make.
Jan, our Cheshire Volunteer Co-ordinator was recruited as the Steward for the Show and worked alongside the judges in each section, ensuring everyone was presented in the correct order and on time.
Throughout the Show, Anna, our Cheshire Dogs' Home Manager provided a first class running commentary throughout the event finding out more about the history of the canine contestants, taking time with each entrant in every class and in some classes, such as Best Rescue Dog, finding out what happened to each dog before it was re-homed. Each class offered 1 st -4 th prizes, including the Most Handsome Male, Prettiest Bitch, Cutest Puppy and the Dog That The Judge Would Most Like To Take Home. Every winner received a certificate, medal and rosette with the 1 st prize winners gaining an additional cuddly toy.
The Best In Show finale was a fantastic hit with the crowd and all of the entrants deserved a prize for their dogs, but that's the trouble with competitions, somebody has to win and others have to lose, but it's very hard to choose.
All in all, the event went very smoothly with the enthusiasm of both staff and volunteers shone out and really put forward all of the good work carried out by Manchester & Cheshire Dogs' Home.
Well done to everybody for a wonderful day, made better by the weather. We made a total amount of £985.39 and thanks to everybody for their contributions to help both CDH and MDH continue performing the hard work of helping dogs brought into them and the education of the public, especially the micro-chipping and neutering schemes.

SCRUFFTS FUN DAY AT MY PET STOP, DENTON
SUNDAY 19TH APRIL 2009
Our event season kicked off to a great start when we attended the My Pet Stop annual charity day on Sunday 19 th April. There were a number of charities on display besides ourselves selling dog-related items.
The event itself featured demonstrations from the Guide Dogs and Dogs For The Disabled charities along with talks to raise awareness of the work animal charities do. There was also face painting with the highlight of the day being the ‘Scruffts' fun dog show, judged by the UK's leading dog trainer Mary Ray.
Our Manchester Dogs' Home stall was very popular with both new and current supporters and was manned by a number of regular volunteers, including Chrissie McCall, our volunteer co-ordinator. Free educational advice, handy tips and doggy treats were on offer at the stall throughout the day.
Kicking off the day was the Most Handsome Parade, all the entrants were really well behaved, not a bark was heard. Our very own MCDH mascot Pickles was an entrant and managed to be a good sport, even when the first prize went to another Handsome Dog!
